Latest I heard is that lifetime subscriptions were being offered by MCM in order to survive.

I understand that Gregg Hutchings their owner editor made a return flight from Hawaii to Salt Lake City for the GSL this year to publicise Model Cars Magazine, so could someone enlighten me if Model Cars Magazine has been brought back on track, as it appears that they may have had a large injection of cash made available via those lifetime subscribers?

I used to subscribe to both Scale Auto and MCM, but will just stick to Scale Auto as it is the only one I have confidence in at present to deliver.

Yeah he got all the lifetime subscribers he needed, idiots that they are 2 months ago and not a peep out of him. Scam artist he is.

I think lifetime subscriptions means it'll take a lifetime to get a subscription.

I did rejoin the  MCM forum as it's the only active forum there is. It's a last ditch effort before giving up on forums entirely.

I think he did get an injection of cash, but judging by some of the questions that were raised I personally don't think it was anywhere near what he wanted or needed. I didn't appreciate his attitude towards previous subscribers when asked about past due issues. I got the impression he was hoping to wipe the slate clean with everyone and start all over, but when he didn't get an overwhelming response he got testy and even pissy. I would like to know about the dash plaque however, does it come in 1/25 scale as well as full size? Stick out tongueWink

Those of us that have been around for awhile see the writing on the wall- MCM is dead and Gregg is trying to breathe new life into a dead body. He has done so many people wrong in this hobby that he will have a difficult time getting anyone to contribute to the magazine should he find a way to get it printed. His latest attempt- a Lifetime Subscription for $150- was meant for him to print enough magazines to sell to continue printing. Gregg has had major back issues since a car accident years ago that prevents him from working a job so it is a mystery to me as to how he can afford to live in Hawaii. My opinion is that this latest attempt will fail and those expecting to get a magazine might see one issue and the rest will never happen. Gregg has his loyal supporters but I cannot see how anyone would be happy paying $150 for a magazine that may or may not materialize. None of his "subscribers" have mentioned a word about any of the promised "swag" or updates, which lead me to believe that either A) Gregg is busy working on the magazine or B) It's just a matter of time before he announces he's admitting defeat. Feel bad for those that "invested" in his scheme.

There has been some grumbling going on over at the MCM forum, me thinks the natives are getting restless!

And as usual one of the "regulars" comes to Gregg's defense. I'll never understand why some people remain loyal to him. Huh?

Is it in the status of the magazine thread? Only saw a grumble in the last post, no one supporting him. I don't get the loyalty either. I quit the rag in 14, and have never bought another issue. It isn't all that great anyway. Gregg has made excuses since he was editor of PF.

There's a thread in the General board about Modelhaus. In that thread it's revealed that Gregg engaged in some selling "behind the scenes" some time ago.

Bill was at the local home improvement store looking for some items he needed for a project.  He bumped into Tom, his neighbor.  After exchanging pleasantries, Bill asked Tom, "Say, do you have that $206 dollars you owe me?"  Tom replied, "Not right now, but I will get it for you; because I would rather owe it to you than to beat you out of it."

Just thought this may fit into the conversation.

I don't get the dedication. Gregg has been full of himself since the start. He has had excu since he was editor of Plastic Fanatic and that rag was always late. Sorry but MCM is a amateur mag and not as good as they taut. The only thing they have SA doesn't is Larry Greenburg. I like his reviews.

Couldn't agree with you more. I think most of the staff at MCM is infantile and plays favorites perfectly. Their forums can be interesting at times, but others not so much. Too much praising of novices whose work is questionable at best and the magazine itself does get repetetive by the end of the year. And posts linger on there forever, with people commenting on companies that have long folded up. Or whining about gas cap placement on a model because of accuracy. Please, this is a hobby for fun, not to earn an engineering degree with. One commentor here had an interesting observation though, that in other nations different kits are attracting a different and younger hobbyist. Very true. I was in Europe last year and picked up 2 resin kits that were not available in the U.S. at all, at least I never saw them being offered on any website, Ebay or otherwise. One was of the previous generation VW Passat, and the other of the previous generation Mondeo, sold in the U.S. as the Contour/Mystique. Both were beautifully executed, and didn't require much prepping at all to be buildable. And not just trans kits, but full kits as well. And the chrome was done and very nicely as well. This country has become addicted to social media and x-boxes, but elsewhere people actually still sell model kits and offer good and interesting choices. Didn't see one Mustang/Camaro being offered in the two different shops I was in. Lots of VW's, Toyotas, and even Renault's, sprinkled with European Ford offerings. Even had an old 72 Tunderbird kit in 1/24th scale as well !! Guess it comes down to what sells where. Which is why they don't offer lots of that stuff here. There are so few manufacturers of kits left here, and how many times do you really need to reboot Mustangs, Camaros and Firebirds ?? But like the auto industry itself, which sells less models of automobiles now than 10 or 15 years ago, the model industry seems to follow it closely. Less and less and manufacturers quietly disappearing. And the great ones like Modelhaus are getting older and retiring and sadly no one up to par or their standard of quality is filling their shows. Anything you bought from them kit or otherwise was amazing. Pride came before profit. And some of the reboots that Round 2 has put out are poor quality. But it is what it is. Dwindling and dyeing off in this country at least.

Sounds like he's still working on issue #206 which is a "Contest Issue". The "contests" however date back to 2017. It hasn't even been published yet and it's already old news.

Hi Prowler it's the current MC M subscribers I feel sorry for getting a raw deal. Maybe it is heading for the proverbial iceberg like the Titanic as the subscribers get fed up with always waiting and dump their subscriptions due to the poor service already paid up front for.

I gave up on them about a month ago for that reason but  also the endless dribble that some of the members go into in the forums and are allowed to get away with it. If you have an MCM Ohana or something like that in your i.d. you literally get to say or do anything you want. A thread that was up for over 9 years and made no sense at all, is still active and if your opinion does not concur, you are the bad guy. They all need their heads looked at from the editor on down to the moderators. My nephew made a statement and was criticized to no end because of it and that was the last straw for me. Not worth the stupidity and grief. Example, what do dirtbikes have to do with factory stock, or with muscle cars ?? Don't dare question, because if you do, they spank you.

I have just read this topic from the beginnihg and am going to stop reading any more...it turned into endless dribble about halfway thru the first page.  there are 3 posters who should be required to read the whole topic twice a day for the rest of their lives....

You can say what you want about MC magazine and its possible demise.  But I must take exception with your slamming the MCM forum.  It is much more active then this one, I have yet to see a section there with the last post being 7 years ago or even three week ago.  As for the constant praising of poor quality work, I do agree with that.  The moderators may be a bit biased, but then all of us have differences of opinion and many of them stink.  I am a subscriber, let me rephrase that, I foolishly sent my money to a pit from whence it will probably see no fruit.  I do not like the constant excuses, posters have been blocked on both forums for using those same excuses in bad trade deals.  So, yes I am a bit leery.  Having posted this, my posts will probably be watched more closely over there, because I am sure someone will forward it to the moderators.

I agree it has a good forum. It does have a bit more traffic, but the main reason I bother with it is the open trading allowed. I've always had success there from that perspective. But in all honesty I've seen some very old threads dug up there recently. I know I saw something from 2011.

With the exception of Harry P., every moderator, past and present, has a tremendous amount of bias at MCM. Each one of them interprets the rules differently, they have no consistency with their interpretations and no consistency with their punishments. I will never understand how that place has survived for almost 12 years. There are always issues with the software, bugs and glitches that Ambrose tries to fix but can't find a solution for. But somehow it survives, and I for one will never understand it.

Could not agree with you more. And I have never seen a site that has so many knowledgeable self appointed 'experts' on every topic like on there. Disagree with them, or have a diffent opinion, first they will become horrified and come out in packs like wolves, and then a moderator will ban you, spank you, or anything else they can do. More like a club of grumpy old men than an open forum. None of the moderators follow the rules, they make them up as they go along, and bend them to their own liking. And worse yet, none are on the same page. This site and forum is far more friendly, offers much better tips and advice, and has nicer people participating. And sadly the magazine is rarely on time at stores and is becoming loaded with garbage advertising. They need to get their act together and quickly I think.

I tried that forum out years ago and was not impressed with the management. Sadly, the owner and/or principle moderator was a hot head and made a lot of tempermental posts; very rules obsessive. I don't follow that magazine or forum, but I understand there's a lot of great members over there that are here as well.  I've been here mostly and on some local club forums.  I'm here because I believe SAM will always be here.

It's a very simple equation; treat your members right, you'll be alright.

There are pros and cons with any forum. Personally I look at both SA and the MCM forums regularly and always find something of interest on either.

Provided that the postings do not get really abusive or out of hand, and the moderators are reasonable towards opinions being freely expressed without resorting to animosity, then some lively debate can only be to the good. It is important to be able to be able to express differences of opinion yet remain civil at the same time.

I am a member of both forums and find valuable information from both.  However there also seems to be those members with very sensitive egos on both forums.  If you make a comment the least bit different from theirs, they come back all huffy and defensive.  Open civil debate is healthy, and we may need to learn how to agree to disagree, just keep the nasty comments to yourself or post them on one of the many social media forums.  This is a hobby I have enjoyed for the most part of 60 years, and it is just that, a hobby.  I believe I have earned the right to not like a certain subject either in part or complete and should be able to state that opinion without being chastised or harangued.  But then civility is lacking throughout our modern culture.  I drive a school bus, ask me how I know there is a lack of civility.

Rick, you are spot on about sensitive egos. The moderators on MCM put paid to any criticism about the magazine deliveries going so far out or simply asking how it is faring and will it get back on track. I guess we all know that it was the late Harry Pristovnik who was the real driving force behind the magazine before he died and then it went into spiral decline, losing good writers and probably disappointed subscribers. How is the other alternative magazine Model Car Builder doing as it is not available over here in the UK?

Not familiar with Model Car Builder magazine.  But then the only time I go into a bookstore anymore is to buy my issue of Traditional Rod & Kulture, and now that one has also gone.  Guess I'll have to go back by there next time I'm in town to see if they have it.
