Everyone seems to love MCM forums best but SA magazine best... gets me thinking.  What is your favorite forum or social media site for model cars?

Looking at earlier posts eschewing the way the hobby is going makes for interesting reading. A number of posters reflected on US kit manufacturers who have gone and a desire for certain American subjects to be kitted. Those were the good old days when those firms could just rely on the American baby boomer market. The world market has changed as the next generation in a shrinking market has other interests. That is why the surviving manufacturers make formula one racing cars and exotics super cars. The likes of AMT and MPC have gone the way of the dinosaur, catering for a mainly US market. Look at Tamiya and the car kits they have made down the years as they have always catered for a world market with their kits.

I have to agree with BUGATTIFAN.

I too believe the world market will continue to help the hobby stay alive as the U.S. market continues to shrink and manufacturers continue to disappear.

As others have said, this is an aging hobby and is known about by the younger generations less and less . We are slowly becoming unknown as a hobby at all.

As more and more hobby shops disappear other hobbies will disappear too. Gundam seems to be strong in our area and so does RC car racing, but the staple of our last remaining hobby shop, model car kits, sales are dwindling.

Like many here, I have a nice stash that will carry me for the rest of my life and into someone elses.

For me, model car building will continue to be a source of great pleasure no matter the condition of the hobby.

I'm still trying to find out whether they still do their magazine, as I've never found a copy in the UK. All model making magazines need to be promoted to rescue the downward spiral of our hobby.

FYI Patrick, if you visit the MCM website … you can view an entire sample copy.

Patrick, Model Cars Magazine and Model Car Builder Magazine have never been on bookshop counter sale in the UK. Occasionally I would see a copy of Scale Auto on counter sale, but I have never seen a UK retailer stock it regularly. WHSmith appears to get Fine Scale Modeler on the shelf as one of their regular model magazines.

Has Model Cars Magazine finally folded?

Their forum is still up and running but the magazine seems to have all but disappeared! Rumour has it that they are in severe financial difficulty.

Apparently they lost their publisher & have not been able to recover to this point.

Hey Noel,

It looks like the "locksmith" has struck once again at MCM ...

Too bad, MCM is (was) a good magazine. Kit reviews were excellent.

There was a thread on their own forum directly asking if it was still going. One of their moderators locked the thread recently before a yes or no answer may have appeared.

I guess that was the one Tony O referred to. Slightest hint of criticism or a controversial subject raised either gets deleted or locked.

What amazes me is that this thread about a competing magazine isn't locked. If you posted on there about this magazine, it would be locked in seconds. I personally do not miss mcm the magazine. I subscribed from the beginning, in fact when it was Plastic Fanatic, Gregg was the editir at that, and even then it was always late. after years of every issue being late and every issue arriving moderatly to severely damaged and Gregg's excuses I gave up in 2014. Never regretted it. I have been with SA when it was SAE, June of 1992 to be exact, and it is the best car modeling magazine out there. The reviews are just as good as the other mag. What I DO miss is Car Modeler, SAE's sister publication.

In the thread that got locked last Friday, someone pointed out that Gregg hasn't had any updates regarding the magazines status. When points like this are made and go unanswered it just doesn't give you a very confident feeling that the next issue is coming anytime soon, if at all. It was my understanding that the next issue was supposed to be the contest issue, I'd like to think that would be a good seller at the news stands and hobby shops and give him some extra incentive to get it published.

The Kahuna has spoken. But then again we've all heard this before ... It will be interesting to see how long it takes for one of the cheerleaders to get up on his soapbox and try to shame everyone into subscribing because "supporting Gregg is good for the hobby"

I saw Gregg's lengthy 'reply that was allowed to be added to the locked thread! Looks like he is obsessed about keeping the magazine going. Cannot see how he can keep a commercial magazine in print as a one man band indefinitely. It must be costing him a fortune to produce and distribute each issue.

If that's the case, I really wish people would give him a tiny bit of credit and stop ragging on him.

I would say that he's doing the best that he can with a very difficult situation.

He was using excuses for lateness when he was editor at Plastic Fanatic .

Steve, perhaps he should have been more aware of the magnitude of what he was taking on. Without a publisher similar to Golden Bell or Kalmbach  behind the layout, production and distribution, I fear it will continue to struggle on.

Didn't our emoticons selection once have a 'beating a dead horse' icon? Curious, as I just happened to be looking for it.

carry on...

If there isn't one, there should be!

Seems to be a lot of dead horse beating on a lot of the forums about many subjects.

I just can't get on the bandwagon of constantly smashing someone about a subject I know absolutely nothing about.

I have never published a magazine, & I do not wish to.

And until I have that experience, I'm not going to pound anybody that is trying to, regardless of how terribly I might think he's handling it.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Just came back from the LHS, needed to grab some Evergreen strip. I overheard a customer ask one of the clerks if they had the most recent issue of MCM. The clerk asked the cashier, the cashier just shrugged his shoulders and said "I have no idea when the last issue was even printed." Kinda sad really but it got me thinking, does anyone know?

Hi Prowler it's the current MC M subscribers I feel sorry for getting a raw deal. Maybe it is heading for the proverbial iceberg like the Titanic as the subscribers get fed up with always waiting and dump their subscriptions due to the poor service already paid up front for.

I gave up on them about a month ago for that reason but  also the endless dribble that some of the members go into in the forums and are allowed to get away with it. If you have an MCM Ohana or something like that in your i.d. you literally get to say or do anything you want. A thread that was up for over 9 years and made no sense at all, is still active and if your opinion does not concur, you are the bad guy. They all need their heads looked at from the editor on down to the moderators. My nephew made a statement and was criticized to no end because of it and that was the last straw for me. Not worth the stupidity and grief. Example, what do dirtbikes have to do with factory stock, or with muscle cars ?? Don't dare question, because if you do, they spank you.

I had that rating over there and got banned a few years ago for expressing my opinions then on Gregg and the magazine and other things. I am back and have that rating again and I'm sure if I said what I felt I would be again. It's not your post rating that allows you freedom of expression, t's how much you kiss his rear.

The drama over there got turned up a few notches yesterday. As usual, the guys calling balls and strikes got in the last word by deleting the posts that they don't want you to see.
