Access to free downloads??
Posted by heylonghair on Monday, November 25, 2019 11:39 AM

I see that there is currently a free Exotic Car Models download being advertised on the site.  It is located in a Free Downloads section of the website that includes other "free" articles as well.  In order to download the article though it is asking for my email address.  I'm already a subscriber and don't want to add my email again as that has sometimes resulted in multiple, duplicate emails being received.  As subscribers do we not have access to these downloads?  Is there a way to get these downloads without signing up for the newsletter again and again?

By supplying your email address, you are only showing where to send the download to.  You will not receive any other emails from Kalmbach.

Not saying you're wrong but right below where you enter your email it says "By signing up you may also receive newsletters, reader surveys and occassional special offers from Scale Auto Magazine. View our privacy policy."

I just tried one and once you enter your email a download link shows up.  It was not sent to that email so obviously they're harvesting those emails for something.  I'm a long-time subscriber and already get their newsletters.  Not sure why they can't just have a direct download link right there?  Just feels a little shady to me...

I have been a subscriber for many years and I have downloaded the files and only received one email newsletter a month and not multiples.  I have also received offers from Scale Auto, Fine Scale Modeler and other Kalmbach mags and I usually delete them once I have read them.  I was suspect of this practice at first, but after a couple of times, I'm okay with it.  Many sites follow a simular practice.  If you are not comfortable with this procedure, don't do it.  I have had no issues with it.  BTW, it's always good practice to read the site's privacy policy.  I think that by supplying your email address to them, it allows them to track how many downloads they have per file.
