Any chance of getting a chat room?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 5, 2004 9:15 PM
I thought it would be cool if we could chat with one another, and since we can see who's online, i thought the next thing to do is add a chat room. What do you guys think?

heck, if you guys got one, i couldnt use it. people in chat rooms can type faster than i can talk! topic would be over long before i could get a word in edgewise!

I went to a "gentleman's club" because the sign said they had all the hottest models. I thought it was a hobby shop. Man, was I ever disappointed.

Sorry folks, but as noted before, and for several reasons, we won't be having a chat room in the forseeable future.

Oh well, there's always e-mail.
I'm hopelessly addicted to building models. Not finishing them, just building them.

jhaught - OK, I can understand why you folks at Scale Auto don't want a chat room on your site, but I do have a question.................. Would you mind it if we, as forum members, started a chatroom on our own, and used your name ( Scale Auto ) as part of the chatroom name ? Also, would you mind if we posted a link to this chatroom on the forum ?

No, we can't do that either.

I've seen this happen on other Web sites. The problem is the chatroom is unmoderated by a staff member, and the standards that are upheld on the forum are not carried over to the chatroom (e.g. swearing, "mature" content, etc.) Then when stuff goes way off topic, our name is associated with it which makes us look like we're responsible.

Sorry guys, no can do.

Hi Andy,

I compleatly understand SA's position here....I have a question.

If we start a chat room, I understand I would be compleatly unrelated to this site, could we however, post a message, stating there is a chat room available, with out putting SA's name anywhere on it....Yahoo gives you the oppertunity to have a chat room by invitation only. Again I understand your position here....don't blame you!!

Also can I post a message asking all members if they would be interested in an off site chat room, by invitation only?

Thanks
Bob

Guys,

I back Andy 100% on this; we have discussed it at length, and either directly or by association, Scale Auto is not going to get into the chatroom business for the forseeable future. Even using our name in/on a separate chatroom gives an implied or tacit endorsement that we are not willing to give.

There are other venues available for this, if you really want to start something -- or add to an existing group.

O.K. Jim, I understand your position, not a problem here. Are you saying that we cannot post a message directing members to an off site chat room? just want to make sure I have it crystal clear, I, in no way want to implicate SA in something they do not want to be involved in.

Also you said that their are other avenues available, could you explain what is available?

Thanks
Bob

As a new member I asked about the chat room also. I totally get what your saying about the bad stuff that would end up in there. we all have to remember there are going to be younger folks in here that are just looking to get so good advice from us and not a bunch of siber garbage to mess up this great websight.

There's already an excellent model car chat room on the web: PSAB chat, set up by a very prolific model car builder. http://ice.prohosting.com/~plasto/psabchat.html

PSAB chat is hosted during its peak time, which is from about 7:30PM US Eastern Time (EST in winter, EDT in summer) until about 9pm or so on weeknights, and on Fridays and Saturday, until whenever. Foul language isn't permitted by the host server, in fact most "bad words" are automatically blocked (the poster only is notified of that). The hosts do have administrative powers in case someone simply must be removed from the room, but that hasn't happened but perhaps half a dozen times over the past 3-4 years. PSAB gets many of the more prominent modelers in the World, from all over the US, Canada, Australia, and periodically from Europe & Scandinavia as well (we've seen modelers from England, Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and even the Baltic region nation of Estonia as well).

Many PSAB chatters get together at the major shows, NNL's, contests, and have become very, very close friends. We talk mostly model cars, trucks, anything modeled with wheels bigger than wings (Oh yeah, we do share about the weather, sometimes the same stuff we'd talk about at a model club meeting--in fact, it's very much like a large, wide-spread model car club). Come on in, check out PSAB, I don't think you will be disappointed.
