Spam prevention
Posted by OldTallDad on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 8:21 AM

This morning I browsed through the forums; of the 24 forums, 6 had spam posts showing...that's 25%!

Several suggestions:

Temporarily disable the "link" icon and functionality until solutions to prevent spam are in place.

Don't allow new members to post until they have been on board for 3 (or some other magic number) days.

Don't allow new members to insert links until they have been on board for 7 (or some other magic number) days.

It's getting way outta hand now. They don't even try to hide it in an original post. Maybe make new members answer a question that only a modeller would know before allowing them to post? Some forums make new members introduce themselves before allowing them to post. I think either one would weed out most of the spammers. Robby is now able to appoint moderators. So, this stuff should get cleared up sooner than later.

I'd suggest the first few posts of any new member has to be approved by a moderator. annoying, but easiest way to really put a stop to it.

Using a moderator is probably the best approach, but requires personal involvement. The "No posts for X days" doesn't require human intervention and if a Spammer can't post immediately, they might be discouraged and go elsewhere. Just sayin'...

On other sites, mere mortals such as myself can see if the person making the post has made others. As a suggestion, Moderators should have a similar inquiry.

That would point out the multiple offenders and allow you to address them in a bulk manner, rather than  one at a time.

Question for Dale, does reporting the spam help you with your moderator duties or is it a hindrance? Would you prefer that we continue to use the report function or should we ignore the spam and allow you to find it on your own?

The best way to eliminate this is to change the way one signs up. A moderator needs to approve membership, no posting allowed until done.

100% it helps . There’s a spot all reports go to and we can make it a one stop shop for deleting the spam. Please continue to report as normal . It does not help , however to comment “reported” in the post as we don’t see that ....

Well getting mods is not helping. Spammers are worse than aver. Come on admin, ya gotta do something else. No posting until membership is approved, something. I'm sick of it.

I see it getting worse here too,so tell me if this is even possible. I wonder if all newbies could be forced to only post in the "introduce youself"section. I feel it would at least localize the B.S. and make it easier to weed them out. Just a thought.

Other forums I belong to do not have this problem, at least not to this extent.  Maybe someone should actually look into their remedies. ??

I will report an average of three or four each morning.  Just now went back on the site and found another that was less than a couple hours old.  It appears to me there is someone with a vendetta against this forum, because this is the only one I belong to which is spammed to this extent.  I think it might be wise for the IT people to try to locate the source then quietly and quickly send them an electronic nuclear device.

Same here! Instead of focusing on a User ID, can the IP address be used to restrict banned users from using a different name?

it most certainly is helping . I come in once in the morning and once in the evening solely to clean up the spam . I don’t have ban powers to remove the offenders , just the posts . But it’s a start .

I "Applaud" your effort's, and understand you are limited in your new dutie's.

I'm sorry, that you have only been given a box of "Band-Aid's". But there is noticeably LESS spam here. THANK YOU !!!!!!

It's up to those " Higher up on the food chain" to find a cure.

Yes Dale, and I appreciate it being removed but my point is they should never be posting in the first place. They really need to do something proactive, not just reactive. Thanks for your work.

I guess these spammers do not realize today is a national holiday.  Just an observation, many of these spams have a hyperllink to an "essay writing" location.  Makes me think whoever is doing it must think modelers are a bunch of lazy school kids that would rather build models than do homework (hmmm, that sounds familiar from 60 years ago).

It's quite possible that the spammers are located outside the USA, and today is just another Thursday to them.

That's been suggested before, but I don't think the moderators have the authority to do that.

I swear that I am not making this up...

A few minutes ago I looked at the Suggestions and Feedback folder (as a contributor to the magazine, comments here are relevant and helpful to me), and I saw....yes.....a new spam posting.

I began sending a private message to Dale.....and when I checked back to advise him the title of the post....it had already been taken down.

Maybe a little victory, but little victories add up over time.  Thanks Dale for your contributions here, and thanks Robby for continuing to advocate for the Forum in your discussions with the IT team at Kalmbach.

As long as we keep reporting the spam and Dale takes care of it (quickly I might add), it won't be a big problem. It seems to have slowed down to a degree. Although, I did just report a spam post. But, I usually find several on the first visit here.

Just came across one I am not sure about.  It's first line contains a hyperlink to an "essay writing link", but then it does ask questions about a topic of acrylic painting.  http://cs.scaleautomag.com/sca/modeling_subjects/f/36/t/129652.aspx  I reported it as "SPAM?".  These peons are getting really weird and somewhat creative.

I reported that one as spam as well.  It is possible that they may be on to us trying to delete their spam.  Spamming seems to have picked up some over the last couple of days.  I do wonder, why the Scale Auto Forum?
