To Whom It May Concern - Mark, Robby?

I would like to extend my "Congratulations" to the management. Good job guys, if your intention was to kill this forum you've succeeded. Thanks for all your hard work!

Should I start the popcorn now, or wait until a few answers are in?

This thread will be "Locked", long before your popcorn is done....

Dont worry about the thumb print.... paint it rust and call it battle damage.

Soon to be on the bench...

Yeah, no chance of anything being locked here these days.

I would think there is some desire for SA to keep the forum going, though, judging by the proliferation of mass advertising that has appeared on the forum the last few months. As a result, we few who are reluctant to let this once great forum die are finally a source of income for Kalmback.

Jim Hought has often been cited as the reason for the start of the forum's decline, and indeed his heavy handedness may have had something to do with it, but the place never would have sunk to this level under his charge.

I'm not going to lock this thread, there's no reason to. But that initial comment is borderline disrespectful and harassment, and also immature and incorrect.

What I will do is again, 100% transparently explain what is going on.

Like I've mentioned before, myself and Mark, have repeatedly reached out to IT to submit requests for a better moderation system of getting rid of spammers and preventing it from initially happening. The task itself, is on their to-do list, but our publishing company is currently switching to an entirely different website content system for all of our publications and magazines, and unfortunately Scale Auto is on the lower end of the list, so we will not see changes happening to both our site, and our forum for probably another 6 months to a year. It will happen, but not any time soon.

I try, and only me, to address and thwart out any spam we have reported to us, but it is not a main priority. Everyday we are working on our current issue, next issue, and I've just started compiling, editing, and writing everything for our upcoming contest cars issue. We are always working months ahead in advanced on our next issue and future issue after that because, Mark and I's priority is to give you the best print magazine we can, and we take pride in that.

The forum, is not dying, or being killed off. That's just an immature gut reaction thing to say. We still see tons of traffic every single day and week to it, as builders search for info they need, find it on the forum, then leave the forum. The majority of our traffic comes from people, who are not registered on the forum, visiting the forum, finding info, and leaving a few seconds later. Our traffic is not from registered forum users sitting on the forums perusing for hours. The forum itself, is also not profitable or a money maker for Kalmbach/Scale Auto. There is no monetery benefit to having the forum.

Keeping this forum alive and well, yes is important to me, but making sure we have the best print magazine out there for the hobby comes first and is what I was hired to do. If there's spam accumulating in the forum, people complaining that there hasn't been a post deleted from 9 months ago (even though the spammer's been blocked), that will get dealt with when possible, but when I have a to-do list related to our print magazine that needs to be finished. That is and always will be top priority and come first.

Thanks, I understand the frustration, but there's nothing more I can do at this point.

and I just called down to our IT team, again, to confirm that there is a ticket in the system to have this function enabled, but per their words, it will happen when they have the resources for it.

Please be patient, please be respectful.

I also had a list of three of you, now down to 2 due to someone's recent lanuage today, forum members who I have nominated to be our potential moderators when this tech arrives. Again, patience is requested. This will happen but not soon. Please do your best to ignore the spam. It's like junk in our mailbox, we don't want it, but it happens and we just toss it in the trash. I will continue to do my best and keep this place clean.

Just some observations...

I suspect Mark and Robby were probably hired to work on the magazine, not this forum. If they don't spend enough time on the forum, it's probably because they are doing their best to get a high-quality magazine out on time and within budget

As a reminder, this forum is free. It's unusual to hear someone complain about a free product.

A suggestion to Mark & Robby: get with your IT folks and have them install a SPAM filter that would operate much like a profanity filter. That could keep repeat offenders (using different names) from posting the same links to the same SPAM.

Forum members? If you see and report a SPAM post, don't post the fact that you did. All that does is bump the thread up.

So, let me get this straight.  Don't post the fact that we did reported the spam.  How are we to know that it was reported?  Just hope that the next person who comes along won't report it at all just because someone else was to have done it?  I spot spam posts that are already at the top of a section and then I report it and then I tell the membership that I did report it to save someone else the trouble.  If you want the spam post to disappear, post something that is related to that section and it will disappear.

And then the next person reports it and says "So did I" and so on.

If I'm going to post to a thread, it will be for a reason other than bumping a spam thread from the top.

Few things!

I was given full administator access by our IT department today, so I'll see what I can do to step-up security on the forum and cut spammers.

Second, please stop posting that you "reported" a spam. It's a waste of time, clutters up the forum, and there's no point in doing so. Just report/flag it, that's the only way I get a notification, not someone posting "Reported as spam" in a thread.

There's a down-side to not reporting that you've reported a spam. mrmike and I discussed this above...if nobody reports that the post is spam, then you could receive a barrage of reports regarding that spam.

Tough call, and yours to make.

I might suggest that the first person to report the post acknowledges doing so, and no more "Me too" posts after that.

Just a suggestion

How does one message you Robby? I've tried to contact you before. When I click on your profile, I see no message option like one does with other members.

Same here. Apparently the only way to contact you is replying to a thread and hope you notice it.
