From the SCA Editors: Spam Moderation
Posted by Robby DeGraff on Wednesday, January 03, 2018 10:33 AM

Hi all- hope everyone is off to a good start this fresh 2018.

I just wanted to let you know that I've found a newer and quicker way to moderate and delete the spammers that plaque this forum. For whatever reason, all the reports of abuse/spam weren't showing up in my dashboard so I had to do a bit of digging around. (The last reports that were 'new' were form 2014).

I've done a pretty hefty cleaning this morning and hopefully that will lighten up the junk seen on this site. I appreciate the patience, I don't have the manpower or time to spend all day surfing the forums and laying down the banhammer and I can't promise I will be able to do this every day, (because we've got a magazine to put together and that's my top priority) but I'll try now to hope on here more often with this new cleaning tool I've found to get rid of spammers. Once we have a bit more free time and we're finished with our magazine indexing project, hopefully we can figure out a solution to assign a moderator role to someone bysides myself or Mark.

Thanks folks

Robby DeGraff

"I've found a newer and quicker way to moderate and delete the spammers that plaque this forum."  Does this mean we are to continue reporting spam as in the past with the little yellow flag, or not?

Keep reporting them like you usually do, I've just found a better and easy way to now access the reported/flagged comments.

There must be something missing, because the only two that I verified are still viewable. Are the accounts of spammers deleted, or just the reported posts which contain actual spam?

You might want to post this on Facebook and Instagram. He's not going to see it here on the forum, not enough usage and buzz.....

Mmmm, yep that's definitely false.

We just cleaned up, deleted and blocked a bunch of spam. Hopefully that calms things down.

I just reported two myself. I guess we'll see if the report function is still working properly or perhaps it has a glitch?

Just reported two more myself this morning.  For some reason this forum is the only one I have experienced this much spam.

I have seen all kinds of spam on this forum lately.  Just about on a daily basis for the past week.  I have even gotten a Friend Request from someone who is more interested in Gambling and Online Casinos and I refused him/her/whatever.  I have even made a suggestion of changing the sign-up procedure.  I know that the forum is a minor part of the magazine, but with the remaining people here, as a group, we can do so much more with a moderator or two and we can keep the spammers at bay and allow the Admins to focus more on the magazines that they are trying to produce.  With the many people on here daily/almost daily, we can help keep the forum running better.  Just my My 2 Cents

I could also help out if needed. This forum would be so much better with some structure and orginization. But, it takes more than one person to accomplish it.

I realize it's only been a week and we did have a holiday, however, is this still in play? It seemed like having a moderator(s) was gaining some traction, it would suck if the opportunity slipped away ....

It is, we're looking into it, and I've picked out a few folks who have been patient and respectful to be moderators.
