Question about locked topic
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, December 8, 2006 2:55 PM
Over on the Byuilder's Forum, there was a topic about "No Respect" that was discussing attitudes about modeling. I personally thought it was entertaining, and with all the smileys and wink icons, we were all just taking things lightly. It seems the topic was locked and we all got a pretty nasty tongue lashing for slamming other modelers. I respectfully submit that was not the case.

Many of us build all kinds of things. I built airplanes for 30 years, dabbling in ships. Our comments were nothing but friendly rivalry. Goodness, whenever I go to a car show the GM guys razz the Ford and Mopar guys. I go to British shows and the Jag guys razz the Triumph guys. I take my Jag to a cruise in I get razzed by everyone. It's all in good fun and no one is serious. We respect everyone else, and we modelers do too. Let's face it though, folks who specialize in a specific genre do tend to get some stereotypical traits with their direct peers.

I don't think anyone hear had any malicious intent. I linked to a page that had, what I thought, to be a humorous take on all of us. BTW, it has been on the IPMS national website for years. Obviously they can laugh at themselves.

I think the locking of the post and the lashing in the final email was a little overboard. I will probably be banned from this site now, hope not, but if I do, it's been fun.

You may not see anything wrong with that thread (and I agree it was pretty harmless), but the "powers that be" sometimes have a different perspective on what's appropriate or not for this site...and since it's THEIR site, it's their decision. Not much to argue about there.

BTW...I don't think you're in any danger of being banned from the site. Plenty of people have caused a whole lot more trouble and are still here (trust me..I know!) Big Smile

You're still new here...but you'll get a feel for what kind of posts are frowned upon by admin pretty quickly.

Hm.. I started that thread and like Mr442nt, I know one had any "real" hard feelings or malicious intent, but Harry is quite correct. It is their site, after all. Sorry I caused a ruckus.

Rob Geeked There is a nasty little four letter word for building something you're not interested in - work. And that's not what we do here. My Photo Album

In my judgment, it wasn't, and isn't, funny. We have a hard-enough time with others' perception of modeling that we don't need intramural sniping -- and whether you think all of that was friendly, innocent kidding, I know that in many cases it is not. There are many modelers who are intolerant of "other" forms of modeling, and are not hesitant to say so. Witness tuners vs muscle cars, judged vs NNL shows, American vs import, and any number of other examples.

Complaining on this board about "respect" is preaching to the choir; knocking other modelers is unacceptable. We are here to support and celebrate car modeling.

With that in mind, let's end this and go build something.
