Pictures in signitures.
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 22, 2005 9:54 PM
I was just over browsing and posting on the Finescale Modeler board when I just realized that we can have pictures in our signiture over there. Why can you do this over there but not here. Just curious because both places are for all intents and purposes run by the same organization.Alien

I, for one, like it here not cluttered up with all that hooey.

This is a much smaller site with fewer members and less band width. This is probably the reason behind restricting our use of signatures and avatars.

avatars are cool, graphic sigs aren't. I wish we could have avatars, I use this one of these 2 on every other board I'm on
Dr. Eyepatch from Super Milk Chan

and a thumbnail of my favorite pic of my 1:1 Scirocco

Avatars make it easier to remember who's who IMO

I can remember who the people are by their name. I don't really need a small pic to remind me. Don't get me wrog they are neat, they're just something i can do without.

It's part of our overall philosophy: Keep it simple. Stay on the subject. Don't clutter things up with unnecessary stuff. As with posting of images, when you look at individuals, it doesn't seem like much; but when you look at the size of the whole Forum, "little things" become big pretty fast.

After looking closer at the Finescale board I now agree that we don't need all that "hooey" around here. Over there the pics make everything so cluttered looking that I turned off the option to view the signitures. It's easier to read over here.Alien

I agree that graphical sigs would complicate things in a hurry. Avatars would be cool, but I can live without them

BTW that Dr. Eyepatch is cool in someway I can't explain...

The latest from the Finescale board is that the images in the signitures have gotten so out of hand that they are now limiting the size of the images because some peoples sigs would take up an entire page and topics would regulaly run up to 50 and 60 pages because of it.

Now you see the problems we run into; things get out of hand, and stray from the intent of the board. We have to keep things clean and simple, even if that is viewed by some as being more "restrictive."

I like not having pic sigs, it gets so clogged and people have to have huge pics. It is like that over on the automotive forum, that’s why I left and came over here. It was so clogged and a topic was 100 pages long because people had HUGE sigs. I wouldn’t mind having a small avatar.

I seldom go to the FSM board because of that. Some people there think that putting a dozen or more pics in their sig is "Kewl", when in reality all it does is slow down even the fastest systems and wastes time going through to get to the posts. Personaly I'm glad no pics is the policy here.

I wish for the same reason, that when someone quotes someone else's work, that they'ed drop the pics out of their message. We've all ready seen them, usually at the beginning of the post, rehashing just adds to the clutter and seeing the same pics a half dozen times or more is irritating. Slows everything down. Adding pics of similar works is different, as it's not a rerun.

Now if the administration would do something about those here who use a dozen or more lines in their sigs, saying little if anything.

Don't show pictures in your signature, show pictures of your models!

What's the purpose of an avatar anyway? If your name or "handle" is next to your post then I know who posted it. Having a silly picture or a pic of your favorite thing serves no purpose to me. We don't need the clutter. Keep it simple and keep it clean! Thumbs UpYeah!!

I'm glad there's no pics in the signatures. Imagine if we had the community build badges that FSM has. Over there you get some guy involved in ten CBP's and so then he's got like ten badges in his sig now and some of the badges are really huge. Like what was said before, streamlined is better.

Yes, streamlined is better. In fact, this is an example. To keep this from bobbing back to the surface, I'm going to lock it now so we can all move on.
