Tom Daniels CBP anyone???
Posted by Lugi31 on Tuesday, December 07, 2010 12:05 PM

Recently thought of starting my first CBP, but couldn't find any cool ideas until now.

Start time? Now

Finish? Whenever you are done

Rules?

1) Must be a Tom Daniels design original or re-issued kit (there are quite a few of them out there!)

2) Show a pic of your unbuilt kit(s) before you start.

3) Show pics of build progress if you can

4) Show pics of the final result

5) Anything goes!

Would be a good excuse to finish my Bad Actor or Street Fighter or whatever the evil thing is. Only problem is, it's already started, but I'd estimate less than 10% done. No paint at all. I think about all I've done so far is try to fit the front end to the rest of the body, a process that isn't finished yet. Does that qualify?

I think10% started is perfectly fine. I am probably going to go with the same kit (re-issued Street Fighter) I will post my starting photo tonight.

Maybe we could consider opening this up to Ed Roth designs as well? We'll see what kind of response for this Tom Daniels build comes first.

Sounds like a good subject Lugi31, especially with the MDA Model Car Contest in Roanoke VA. coming up on March 5 2011. With the contest theme : Tom Daniel Design. I would like to join this CBP with this as my entry.

If you include Roth in this, it's just a matter of time until others want to let in Darryl Starbird and George Barris and Alexander Brothers and Dean Jeffries and anyone else they like. Not sayin' that's a good or bad thing, just sayin' get ready for it.

I like the idea of keeping it to TD at least for now. There are plenty of kits of all kinds to work with.

I agree with Snake45, There are plenty of TD kits readily available in hobby stores with all of the recent releases of TD subjects. And most TD fans have some in their stash they wouldn't mind building. I would keep it simple or you might not know where you'll end up.

School is in session ladies & gentlemen. If you haven't been to Tom Daniel's web site I highly recommend it. He offers short thoughts about each kit he designed. Good stuff... http://www.tomdaniel.com/85_kits/frm_85kits.html Here is a partial list of some his most recognized model kits. It does not include most of his cartoon kits. It might help in deciding what qualifies here.

Awesome post on the available Tom Daniels kits!

My camera cord has disappeared, but I did take a shot of the unbuilt kit. As soon as I find the cord I will post it. I will be doing the re-issued Street Fighter. I have gotten as far as cleaning up the body a bit, and glued the engine halves together, that's it.

Believe it or not, this will be the FIRST Tom Daniels kit I think I have ever tried to build. Will possibly change things up a bit on the paint and markings but plan to at least keep it recognizable I will be having some fun with it for sure!

Okay, I'm in. I picked up a Street Fighter recently and this seems to be a great reason to jump into it. Gonna be mostly box stock, but of course with my own signiture spin on it.

WOW! I didn't realize T.D. put out that many kits. I'd like to enter the "Baja Bandit" or "Beer Wagon" (if I can get the evil-bay win). Both of which I built back when I was about 8 or 9. If I don't get the win there, I'll try picking up the "Tijuana Taxi". I know that's still on the shelves at Hobby Lobby.

Hmm. Just took a look at my WIP's and things planned. My Street Fighter is pretty low on my list of priorities so I'll sit this one out. But I'll be watching.

ok guys here are some pics of my progress.

this is nice kit dispite its age.the chrome parts plating in my kit is very thin infact,if you hold the parts up

to a light you can see the lime green under it. other than that there are a couple of fit issues that i had to contend with.

pic of the kit, i started on the engine, then i remembered to start taking pics!..lol.

pic of the engine. there is a fit issue with the mating of the front cover to the block/heads, i had  to fill a sizeable gap.

their are only 3 major body parts, and they can be cleaned up/assembled as one unit.

makes painting easy!

on the bottom of the body, there are some deep ejector pin holes i wanted to fill.

i streched some sprue and made some "plugs" to glue in the holes. i used liquid cement

to "weld" the plugs in then waited overnight to cut the plugs flush with the body.

will have more pics coming soon.

hey all,

got some more done on the trantula.

here are a few more pics.

got the engine mocked up and test fitted. i found when i mounted the blower on the intake using the align. pins,it was crooked!, so i cut the pins off and remounted it.

got the body painted,i used boyd's lime pearl enamel from testors.

decals applied and ready for clearcoat. will have more pics as build progresses.

Nice job on that Tarantula. The biggest let down on that kit is the front wheels. I saw a great tutorial on lacing your own spoked drag wheels. You may want to look at that...

Very nice looking builds so far! I live in the insanely frigid Northeast so painting things is taking a bit longer than I anticipated as I normally try to do most of it outside. Pics will come as soon as I have a few more things put together.
