New JoHan '59 Rambler wagon kit
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 20, 2003 4:22 PM
Hi Everybody,

I'm new at this so excuse me if I mess something up. I've been going nuts trying to find the new Johan '59 Rambler wagon custom kit and I can't find it ANYWHERE! I've seen pictures of it, heard people talk about it, read articles about it, but nobody knows where I can buy it! Does it even exist? Does it really come with 3 decal sheets and all that other cool stuff? Help!

I've seen them at Hobby Lobby.About $8.You can probably order one from a hobby store on-line,like Model Roundup,or a dozen others.Good luck.If you can't get one,you can send me the money and I'll get it for you.

I'm sorry, could you please tell me about the kit? Is it as cool as I've heard?

It's a very kewl kit. Not without it's issues, since it's a very old mold, but nicely done in white plastic.
Downside: The windows (clear glass) are molded in green tinted plastic. Interior doesn't fit the body, not sure where this interior came from. It's too narrow and not long enough. Featureless chassis, since it's based on promo tooling. Wheels that don't fit the tires. Very limited production.
Upside: 3, count em, 3 complete decal sheets, and beautiful ones at that. Extra parts include fender skirts, surf boards, and some other accessories. Dodge Lancer hubcaps for that kewl 50's look. Nice shiny chrome. Oustanding instructions, which show a total of 14 ( you read that correctly) possible building versions. Color chart on side of box, and interior color references on instructions. Lots of little detail notes here and there on instructions. It's a Jo Han, which is to say, excellent body proportions, clean crisp molding (except for some minor sink marks on the very front edge of the hood where it looks like the mold was fixed/corrected?, easy fix though). Okey Spaulding is making every effort to reproduce some wonderful old kits, and I whole heartedly support him in his effort. The guy's doing this on a shoe string budget, and I love having some of these kits again. I found 2, and bought both, one to keep, one to build eventually. This is a fun kit that will lend itself to some very kewl kustom work, worth buying if you can find any.

Yes, this is a fantastic re-release of a 40 some-odd year old tool. I dig mopars first, and then ramblers & amc's and this is a kewl wagon!! Yeah, it has a couple sinks but thats ok, nuttin a little putty can't fix. And the decals are unbelievable!!! This thing has more options, I'm tellin 'yall it's the best I've seen in a while. Now heres the scoop.....Johan made I believe 3000 kits and then stopped cause the molder/packager made some huge mistakes. Welded off the promo-style tire part, and didn't weld-off the Dodge Lancer wheel. Thats why only the 1st 3000 got the lancer covers, cause the moons weren't the right size (forgot to mention that). Ok, Johan has a partner that supplies free the wheel-backs to mount any of the promo-type wheels in standard kit tires. There's a little slip of paper in all mine sayin to Send a self-addressed-stamped-envelope to this dude Mark Holland in care of Best Resins and You'll get the free wheelbacks. P.O.Box 224451 Dallas, Texas 75222-4451. There's another slip to send back to johan if You want the correct-size moons too!! Now when was the last time ya saw a model company reach out to fix their mistakes?? I like this new owner Okey. And I hope he keeps issuing all the johan stuff he can. Ok, back to the kit....remember back when (oops I'm dating myself here) all those cars' glass had a light green tint to them so I think the green glass is actually appropriate. The kits interior tub is actually a custom 1960 or 61 item and the glass pattern is the one used originally in the promos which did Not have glass; thats why the tub doesn't fit the glass. But that Mark dude at BestResins offers the correct 1959 interior too. I got like 4 of them at hobby lobby, but all the shelves are bare right now untill Johan gets this back into production.
