Message for "Railroad" and the mods.
Posted by 195X on Monday, April 13, 2020 2:18 PM

I can't send you a private message because every time I try, a NORTON subscription renewal page comes up! I DON'T HAVE NORTON!!

Your bumpers are finally on the way, so sorry for all the delays. We were all sick last week. (Not the virus).

Because of this, as well as the ridiculously aggressive ads, I will keep my membership open until I hear that the bumpers have been recieved. Then I will be logging out for good and going back to lurking. It is my opinion that the website and the commeraderie that used to be here just isn't what it used to be. Cheers.

If you've tried 3 different ad blockers and your still seeing ads then your obviously doing something wrong. First off, what browser are you using? Ad blockers will only work with certain browsers, it needs to be current and kept up to date. Personally, I use Firefox for my browser and run AdBlock for Firefox.

This is not the only site affected by the ridiculous adds.

It's not the responsibility of the subscribers to mitigate this situation by installing add blockers.

It is the responsibility of the site administrators to take action, unless they would prefer to lose what's left of their already meager traffic and membership.

I wish I had an answer to this , but advertising keeps the lights on . Let's face it , print magazine sales are down more and more every year. And nobody steps up to pay hosting bills to keep the site running . Ads are the only answer .

What we are seeing is the beginning of the end for forums like this, at last count seven of the 12 forums I visit have gone to FB. I don't do FB, so we either have to deal with the stuff that irates us or start paying for it. I'll just close my computer when it comes to paying for forums.

I don't mind the adds so much as long as they don't begin to over take the entire site.

The other magazine forum has a real problem right now with adds invading even the thread titles.

If they don't get it under control, it's going to cost them.

There is no point in having advertisers if you don't have any customers.

I see also, moderation doesn't seem to care the site is flipping pages. I just tried THREE TIMES to respond but, the page kept flipping to full page ads for NORTON and MACAFEE!

You seem to be the only one experiencing issues with "flipping pages" and messages from Norton and McAfee, is it possible that your computer has a virus or malware? I have never experienced "flipping pages" before. Sounds to me like the problem is on your end, but then again I ain't no computer techie so you can take my advice with a grain of salt.

I've run virus scans several times. Nothing. Again, three attempts to reply. Just letting the mods know there MIGHT be an issue before I leave. Only sticking with it this far to make sure Railroad get's his parts. Cheers and thank you for trying to help.

And nobody steps up to pay hosting bills to keep the site running.

I don't recall anyone trying. It has been mentioned a few times on the other forum, with some people saying they would pay, and many saying they would leave. I imagine that scares forum management.

In a way, I see that as a good thing. The cost would be reasonable, perhaps about the cost of a single AMT kit per year. I think anyone serious about building, sharing, learning, and checking out models would pony up. It's a pittance really, well worth what a model builder would get in return. The tire-kickers who refuse to pay can wallow in the facebook quagmire. I, for one, would gladly pay for access to a quality forum populated by serious builders, and those serious about learning.

As a forum owner, it would be risky, though. I get that. It also doesn't seem to fit SAs agenda. Accessability is key for them, though things are certainly suffering as is. Maybe it's time to change things up. If such a forum existed, it may have the potential to draw serious builders who like the idea of an add-free forum filled with like minded people, and hopefully devoid of some of the nonsense we occasionally see by less serious attendees, or anytime on facebook.

I'm not talking about exclusivity. All are welcome. But I think by paying, the demegraphic would be refined. Just thinking out loud.

if I am on my computer using Microsoft edge and have ad blocker disabled the same thing happens to me here, on FSM and on my photo hosting site servimg. And I will not pay for access to any forum.

I agree.

I have no issues paying for quality.

It reminds me a little of all of the uproar about Photobucket in recent months.

Well, as evidenced by that fiasco, you can see what "free" can get you.

It all boils down to what my mother told me.

"You get what you pay for".

I now pay about $2.00 a month for Fotki, and I feel like I can trust them.

I wouldn't trust Photobucket to wash my socks!

I would think so as well but, it isn't happening ANYWHERE else. JUST on this site. Really don't give a *** either way, I was just trying to give you mods a heads up. No sweat off my *** if you don't believe me. Wink

ots not a matter of "not believing" you . It's a matter of I cannot replicate your troubles . I tried two different computers and my mobile phone . All pages load normally for me . Hence why I believe it's a problem on your end .

Correct.

If one individual is having a particular problem and nobody else is, it can't be attributed to the board.

There is obviously a problem with 195X's equipment.

Changed some settings, set to strict filtering now... we'll see what happens. All the ads are gone so, bonus.
