Really? More Deleted Threads?
Posted by Goofy62 on Monday, June 25, 2018 9:38 PM

Well guys, I think my time here is just about finished.

In light of the latest entire thread that the mods saw fit to eliminate, I can't seem to find any real reason to frequent this forum any longer.

If the moderators find a relevant discussion about the future of the hobby too offensive, I'm not sure what is acceptable anymore.

I guess it must be better to have relative "quiet" with a dozen or so total posts in a 24 hour period over the entire forum, than it is to have an in depth discussion about anything "too serious" because it may become a little spirited.

This just might be one of the reasons that the post count is nearly non existant on this forum.

So, so long for now guys.

I may be back, or maybe not.

Sorry to see you go Steve. I enjoyed our discussion of the hobby's direction, other than  1 loudmouth having a attitude I thought the discussion was civil.  Spirited discussion and differing opinions is a good thing, escpecially in this day and age of me too and status quo. We don't have to all agree 100% to get along and have fun. perhaps that's one reason forum participation on forums in general is down and social media up, you can say what you want there. This is the closest thing to social media I will ever use. I look at them daily, but not for long, I usually go thru failry quickly, I just don't have hours to spend on it.

As far as I could see, although the discussion was lively, no one was rude or discourteous whilst expressing their views. Maybe it was going too far off track so the moderators saw fit to intervene by axing it altogether?

Initially the thread was just locked but not deleted. Robby got in the last word by singing the praises of social media, especially Instagram and Facebook, because they have more "usage and buzz", his words not mine. I understand that this forum is not a priority for the people here at SA, I don't agree with their position on the matter but I do understand their reasoning. However, Robby has had several offers from current active members to help out with the moderating duties but has never publicly acknowledged them. I really think the time has come to appoint a moderator, if for no other reason than to keep the forum spam free.

I agree with Tony. Offers have been made. It is time to accept one.

Folks trust me, if I could appoint one of you to moderate the forum I gladly would, but I've checked with the IT people on the back end that manage this forum and there is not an option for that right now. I wish there was but there is not. Please do not put the blame on me.

Are there any other options or alternatives? I'm finding it a little hard to believe that the providers of this forum are willing to allow this forum to die a slow death. We're getting overrun with spam constantly, I really think if you eliminate the spam you would see an increase in participation.

I will make one more statement on this matter before I exit.

As far as I am concerned, a forum's purpose is to promote discussion.

Occcasionaly, those discussions can become a bit raucous.

But in the interest of maintianing a healthy forum, I cannot understand why the decision would be made to eliminate an entire robust dialogue on a forum that is suffering in the first place rather than to censure the individuals who are creating the disturbance.

In my opinion, the totalitarian approach of wiping an entire thread from the face of the earth because of the sins of a few is unjust & serves no one.

The offending parties should be warned of their transgressions & the deliberation should be allowed to resume.

If the instigator continues, he should be removed so that the people who want to continue the conversation in a civilized manner can continue.

I will possibly consider offering my opinions on this forum again in the future when this type of autocratic approach is eliminated.

^^^ This statement being exactly why you need a moderator team dedicated to the forums .... Being on top of issues when they arise helps the community see it's taken seriously.  This forum can be such a great resource in addition to the mag . It makes no sense that the IT dept wouldnt allow you to appoint mods  ... It's like the avatars , a few clicks in the control panel ....

In addition to the show coverage the magazine already offers  , you can actively scout these forums for talent and article material for the magazine , it only makes sense to see the forums as a companion , not a competitor .

I am new here, as of  7 / 11/ 2018   1:13 A.M.   I read a little on this thread.  not sure what is the problem, or what is going on,  I believe "if it's broke FIX it, if it's not broke don't fix it"  So that said, I  am here to learn as much as I can.  I  started to build model cars in the 60's.  Then I started to just collect, mostly Corvettes.  I must have 360.   Almost all are sealed.  I do have others, like '54 Chev, '57 Chev.  I am retired now, so I want to learn how to make a  kit look so real it could drive off the work bench .  Any and all help will be welcomed.   Thank you, enjoy your day

Welcome! There has been alot of spam threads started by spammers on this site. We have suggested getting other moderators and some have offered their time and services in that capacity. From the info Robby has provided, the IT team at SA has turned down the idea. My understanding is now they are looking into it. Something needs to be done to block spammers from joining in the first place, or at the very least being able to quickly remove it when it happens. Robby has been doing the entire job himself as well as working on the magazine.

I am a member of a Corvette forum, I am not sure how they protect from the spam.  If you want to ask here is the sight  and they may have some answers.   I am almost 72 and all this new stuff, sometimes is too much.   I like the kiss method.   You know what that is don't you.   But the sight =
My issue, & the point of me starting this thread, had nothing to do with spam.

It had to do with how the administrators were handling threads that they felt might be coming too "contentious".

There was a thread about the issues with magazine subscriptions from a competitor that morphed into a discussion about the future of the hobby.

As any of us who frequent model forums know that it is more or less expected that threads will go off topic on occasion, but as long as the discussion is civil, there should be no reason for the mods to interfere.

This particular thread was progressing with little issue, and while it was spirited, it was not nasty by any sense of the word.

But for reasons unknown to me, or anyone else for that matter, the admins saw fit to delete the entire thread.

I frequent these forums to have an occasional meaningful discussion about our hobby as well as post projects & pick up & offer helpful hints for building them, but when the people in charge begin censoring entire dialogues because they assume that some sort of disagreement might arise, it really chaps my behind.

Why not restrict the offending party, or parties, instead of all of us, if a discussion becomes too combative.

This was the root of my indignation.

Steve, he quoted my comments, so I was thinking he was wondering what I was referenceing.  Yes, your thread was about the removal of the previous thread, but the spam/moderation issue is  what i was referencing in the quote he made from me. Sorry for any confusion.

The thread about MCM didn't belong here plain and simple. If people want to talk about that forum or magazine, they should do it there. Not here. That's like going to McDonalds to order a Whopper. When Jim was here, that thread wouldn't have made it past the first post to morph into another discussion.

If people want to discuss the future of the hobby, they should start a thread about it in the Builder's Corner. Not Community Announcements or What's New. Confused

The administration here currently doesn't have time to go through each and every post. They are working on getting help. As I understand, it's now up to IT. Until that happens, they can only do what they can with what little time they have. We just gotta have patience.
Oh, I see.

There is only room for "certain" topics here.

As long as we do not mention any other hobby related entities other than SA, we are within the parameters of what is acceptable to discuss on this forum.

Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of a forum?

What is the definition of a forum?

"A public meeting place for "open" discussion".

"A medium (such as a news paper or online service) of open discussion or expression of ideas".

I guess that I should just ask for a list of what topics are admissable, & possibly a list of what companies, magazines or other media that I am not allowed to reference.

It sounds a little like we're using the forum's inability to adjudicate itself as an excuse to censor discussion.

If they don't have time to direct their own forum, maybe it's time to shut it down entirely.

If you don't like it here, maybe it's time to leave entirely. That's what I did when I left the MCM forum years ago. I didn't like it any longer. So, I left. No announcement. Just had my account and posts deleted. I felt so much better when I got away from that place!
