About DustyMojave

My parents met at a road race. The 1st race car I remember sitting in was Tom Beatty’s Belly Tank Lakester which at the time held the absolute record at El Mirage. When I was 4, I was pushing straw bales out of the back of a pickup truck to line corners for Cal Club sports car races at Pomona, then spent the rest of my weekend running timing slips from the Timers to the Scorers. I had already worked on my 1st race car, a pair of Lotus 11s. I built my 1st model car, a ’59 Corvette bought from Harry Morrow’s AutoBooks shop in Burbank at the same age. Before the age of 10, working as an SCCA Tech Inspector, I rejected for fuel leaks a brand new Group 7 car (what soon became Can Am racing) that cost the owners 2x what my home cost. I've been a Tech Inspector since 1963 and in 2012 slowed down to working only 1 race series. My father was for a time the Western US Distributor for Lotus Competition cars. He was also Chief of Rules Enforcement for Cal Club Region of SCCA and worked with Mickey Thompson to write the SCORE Rule Book when Mickey created SCORE. Then later dad served as Chief of Tech for SCORE. When the Sylmar Earthquake struck in 1971, I had the week before finished a written inventory of my built model cars which numbered 112 on the shelf. I’ve been a professional model builder for movies and court cases. I'm a past Champion offroad race car Driver and Owner. I’ve won my class and category racing motorcycles offroad across the Mojave Desert. I spent 11 years working in the Plastics Industry in R&D, Manufacturing Engineering and Product Liability. I've designed and made molds. I started making a living as a race car fabricator for my "day job" in 1986. I've built cars for customers which have won their class in the Baja 1000 and others which have set lap records at PIR, Mesa Marin and Willow springs; and set speed records at El Mirage. I've worked on Alfa, 32 Ford Highboy, GT350s; Porsche 914, Sprint Kart, Raceco, Javelin, Tiger, Toyota 2x and 4x pickups; tube frame Corvette; Trans Am Champ Buick, Kurtis Midget, Sprint and Indy cars; ’37 Ford Coupe; Jeeps; USAC Super Modifieds; '27 T Roadsters; LSR Streamliner; Trans Am 67 Shelby Mustang; Hi Jumper Ascot buggies; Baja Bugs; etc., etc., etc. ... These days I'm retired from race car fabrication and living in a small town in the Mojave Desert. Married since 1982. Our son and his team mates won the 5/1600 Baja Bug Class in the 2019 Baja 1000. He's been racing offroad since he was old enough to be in the race car and has been part of several championships. He's also spent several years as a race car fabricator like me.
